Quality Over...Everything Really.
Everyday I listen to artist make new songs over my beats. Some of them are hot, some of them are wack and then there are the "damn that would be hot if...". I can't emphasize this enough artist, your quality is critical when it comes to your music. Make sure everything you do sounds great. Not good. Great. There has been countless times where I would turn something off that lyrically was great but unbearable to listen to because of the quality of the recording and the mixing. I know studio time can be expensive but if you record at home on a shitty mic do your research. There are ways to improve your sound. It doesn't have to be amazing just crisp. Take the right step, read mixing articles, get a book. Resources are all around you to make your music sound good on a radio shack microphone. Technology now a days allows us to manipulate sound to incredible limits, learn and apply and watch how much of a difference it makes when you present your music to somebody. And if you're lazy to do this get someone to mix and master your song for you...like me
